Here are some proven measures that can help you avoid media failure and secure your data should failure occur:

• Before you upgrade: Do you have a backup? Have you made sure that it is a viable backup?



• Check firewalls, and make sure your virus protection software is always up to date.



• When downloading data or copying data, and when installing software, always scan for viruses before beginning.



• Locations housing data media should always be kept within the temperature and humidity ranges recommended for storing media.



• Systems in active use with data media should always be protected by an uninterruptible power supply (UPS).



• Never move a computer while it is powered on, and always place a computer where it is unlikely to be jarred or dropped.



• Try, as much as possible, to reduce or prevent static buildup in the vicinity of a powered-on computer system.
