Here are some useful tips regarding fail-safe data backup practices:
- Establish (and test) a backup procedure, using software appropriate to your system.
- Determine a backup timeframe appropriate to your degree of tolerance for data loss. (ie, if if you backup at the end of each day, then the current day's data is always vulnerable).
- Regularly test the backup, to make sure it is always capturing critical data. (For example, the location key data is being saved to, may be changed, but the backup procedures are not updated to reflect the change).
- Always keep a copy of critical data at an offsite location.
